Man….for the price of an EV and its resale value losses….that better come with a P-Diddy size supply of lube at signing.

The only thing faster than their ability to accelerate is the rate of depreciation.

Went in to the city last weekend and stayed downtown. Took a Lyft to the show cuz the ol lady had a coupon. All black model 3 pulls up with some eastern European kid about 22 yrs old. Said he was here on some H1B Visa something or other (imagine that) and had been driving in town for about 2 yrs. I said so you can go all day driving people around without charging? He said yes except for when he does like a 16hr shift then he will charge in the middle of the day but normally no.I asked how many miles it had and he had no idea so we looked and it was 122K.
Kid was just driving around all day in a pimp a** tesla listening to limp biskit.

I've wondered if a used Tesla would be worth it now. My wife drives about 40 miles, one way to work. She has a nice Lexus, gets about 27mpg on an average tank. Though that's premium. Every car depreciates, but I think would it be worth it after 5 years. That Lexus will still be worth something and fixable. If your Tesla needs a new battery, it's literally the cost of a new car and your current one is worth scrap. I'm not being coy on anything, I'm actually wondering if it would be worth it in the long run.

Depends on how old it is when you buy it....federal requirements is warranty for 8 years, 100K miles. If you buy a 1-2 yo lower mileage car, you have many years of warranty left. The newer battery packs seem to be better about lasting than the earlier packs of 5-10 years ago. And they are now shops that can sometime diagnose and replace or fix a bad cell/module. It may still cast a couple thousand, but many cars these days need transmission work after 10 years...so its probably equal risk.

They arent for everyone, but for a commuter car they can be a nice fit.

I agree regarding fixing the batteries. I think that should only get cheaper overtime.

As far as the future of EV tech, I think solid state batteries aren't far away. Then, they will become far more viable. But for now, I'm honestly considering something for her next year. It will either be I get myself a toy, or I take her car and she gets a used Tesla. These prices are dang good honestly. I've ALWAYS had just a basic car. Currently a base model, manual, Toyota Camry. I admit, driving her GS is a lot more enjoyable. Driving my son's RC is even more enjoyable, especially since he has the upgraded sound package.

I may have to circle back to this thread next summer when it's time to start considering options.

Other than my sports car purchase, I have always driven basic stuff too, and my wife got the nice newer cars. I don’t remember if you have driven a Tesla yet, they are nicer than what I drive, but she light like the Lexus interior better. IMO a Tesla interior is pretty low end, still good enough, but definitely not the premium you would expect for the price point when new.

I do really like the self driving part I witnessed in a drive with a friend, would be good on my commute. I really, really, don’t like how everything is done via the touch screen. I know I could get used to it, but I hate that part of their money saving design.

Edit: also so you aren’t surprised, check your insurance rates. I think our insurance is higher on our electric versus our gas car.

Agreed, it's not even close to a Lexus experience inside the model 3 or Y. The build quality is crap and there are many features that they don't do. Not to mention stuff like their rain sensing wipers are straight up garbage, etc.

News at 11, newsies are retards. It’s quite deliciously ironic that the media hates the working class and non-college goers, but the overpriced educations they received didn’t actually teach them anything. This entirely explains the why of this situation. The most important being the last paragraph. >>

    https://academistan.com/inferior-goods/

Real incomes are decreasing, and the relative price of electric doodads has dropped as ICE vehicles become more expensive, and electric cars become cheaper in the secondary market. These both serve to stimulate demand for electrics cars because electric cars are an inferior good relative to ICE vehicles. That’s why they only sell with hefty government subsidies, state propaganda, and being shoved down our throats.

Literal Econ 101 and as predictable as night following day, we should just shoot all reporters.

This is proof that consumers have a negative impression of electric cars overall.

Batteries last about as long as a gas motor

If there was a battery option for my 1996 Explorer I would love to see its performance today. Meanwhile the V8 in my Explorer will start right up. Even with near 500,000 miles of use.

I know it is possible, but usually an engine/trans with 500k miles will have had something more than basic maintenance.

Nope. Just mainly oil + oil filter changes every 5K miles and no abuse of the AODE transmission. Towed my race bike all over the place.

Yes, I've done more work, but you expect things like new tires, brake rotors and pads, suspension components, etc., because of the mileage. But those have nothing to do with the engine. The 302V8 is a beast.

So, 20+ years? I mean the crappy Dodge is gonna be a thirty year old before I know it.

Sorry your driveway blender will be useless long before that.

You are applying exceptions to the avg. Most people don't take care of a vehicle well enough for it to make it past 100k without extensive repairs and there's plenty of 200k mile Tesla's running around. Why do you think they are the go to vehicle for Uber drivers. Not to mention the savings on gas and maintenance. Hell just the savings on oil changes alone would nearly pay to replace a Tesla battery at 200k

Love them or hate them a used 3yr old electric car is by far the smartest answer for basic transportation mathematically speaking
