Been burning through this genre lately.. Mostly audio book format because i listen to them when I'm at work designing stuff, programing CNC's, and doing other tasks.. I also listen to them while I work out, and when I'm driving. So far in the last year I've knocked out the following: Rememberence of Earths Past Trilogy (3 Body Problem) (and the "4th" book Redemption of Time) Children of Time trilogy by Tchaikovsky The Final Architecture trilogy series by Tchaikovsky Hyperion (first book, couldn't really get all that into it unfortunately) I've also managed to get through a bunch of other non-fiction science, and history stuff on topics I enjoy like Starry Messenger by Neil DeGrasse-Tyson, The End is Always Near by Dan Carlin, Something Deeply Hidden by Sean Carrol, and some R.J Rummel books; Death By Government, and The Blue Book of Freedom. Kinda stuck on what to read next.. I'm considering the other Liu Cixin books like Ball Lightning and Wandering Earth. Blindsight by Peter Watts Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds Anathem by Neal Stephenson Also kind of interested in getting through the Expanse series novels. I absolutely LOVED the show adaptation, but it is sometimes hard for me to read books/watch shows if i have already done the other (watch the show if i have already read the books, or visa-versa) For example I've watched a few episodes of the 3 Body problem Netflix series. It's a fantastic show, and I even like the changes. However, I cant get into it.. I already know what happens. lol I've also never read a book twice because I literally remember everything, and get bored of it quickly.. Anyway... Does the beeb have any suggestions? Whatcha readin'/listening to?
Heinlein - Starship troopers, stranger...really most of his are good Foundation series and shorts by Asimov Harry Harrison - The Stainless Steel rat books Hitchhikers Guide The sword of truth series Brave new world Fahrenheit 451 Riftwar books Animal farm Anything Philip K dick....but start with androids dream electric sheep 20,000 leagues ringworld RA Salvatore DnD books with Drizzt Lots of good stuff out there....i havent read much the last decade or 2 so these are all from later 90's and back...gotta start with the basics
Havent re-read the Stainless Steel Rat stuff in forever, have to find those on the shelf for sure. If you want fun - Any of the Discworld stuff by Terry Pratchett. Good Omens by him and Neil Gaiman is good (as is the tv show)
Almost anything narrated by R.C. Bray or Ray Porter Definitely the Expanse series. It's much better than the show especially towards the end. Red Rising series, especially the later books Expeditionary Force series, for a mindless listen Most of Jeremy Robinson's works like Nemesis Saga and the Infinite Timeline books. Project Hail Mary (before the movie comes out) The Bobiverse series
For Sci-fi I have read this 3 times. November 22, 1963 by Steven king. Time portal to save JFK assassination. I re-read it like every 3 years. Great book.
Man of Two Worlds by Brian Herbert and Frank Herbert. Failure is Not an Option by Gene Krantz, detailing his life and career through the Mercury to Apollo missions.
Hyperion is shit. All of em. Don't know why anyone likes them. I'll give you some of my favorite authors specifically of military sci fi - David Drake - All of the "Hammers Slammers" series. Or anything else he's written. (Vietnam vet, NC guy, motorcycle rider and all around good dude. Died in 2023.) Robert Heinlein David Weber John Ringo John Steakley -Unfortunately passed after his one blockbuster "Armor". Great book. Andre Norton Richard Morgan - "Altered Carbon" series. Very very good. I'm reading the Wheel of Time series currently.
I like Anathem but it's a pretty slow book, could be a little hard to get into. Cryptonomicon or Snow Crash are probably a little better in that regard if you haven't already read/listened to them. I also like Alistair Reynolds and would recommend House of Suns, it's been a minute but I really liked it. If you're in for something not nearly as serious but a really good time I'd check out the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks. The audio is outstanding, really well produced.
Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey (this series of books is what the show The Expanse was based off of). Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card Machine Man by Max Barry The entire Bobiverse Series by Dennis E. Taylor The Arisen Series by Michael Stephen Fuchs (more post apocalyptic zombie than sci-fi) Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells (also made into an Apple TV series recently)
The Horseclans series by Robert Adams. Piers Anthony Incarnations of Immortality series and Bio of a Space Tyrant series, as well as his other books. Margaret Weiss Star of the Guardians series. Simon Hawke TimeWars series. Steve Allen Meg series
Andy Weir- he wrote The Martian, as well as Project Hail Mary (coming out next year in Theaters) and Artemis (about living on the moon). The cool thing about his books is after you read the book, he has a bunch of hextra writing about the science behind what he has written and how it could actually happen. I found this section of the book from Artemis probably better than the actual story, but Project Hail Mary is a must read IMHO. I saw that stangmx13 recommended it as well. two big thumbs up. (Trailer for the movie but gives you an idea of what the book is about)
On a tangent. L Ron Hubbard- Battlefield Earth David Eddings for modern sword and sorcerery- Zelanzy for classic The Dune bunch Throw in some Carl Sagan and Arthur C Clark. All the dragon books by Anne Mccaffery Thousands of great titles to read out there.
15 effing books...eff me, hell no. Dude must be spewing word salsa like Kamala to drag out stuff for 15 effing books.
Thanks for all the suggestions! Stoked to get into this genre some more. Most of my life I have read mostly non-fiction/biography/documentary/history type stuff. with some big hitters splashed in like 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, etc. I never read Harry Potter, or stuff like that. But I am a MASSIVE comic book consumer. (very thankful for digital comics in the last 15 years, as i was accumulating wayyyy too many comics, and I love that I can take them on the road with me to read at hotels/Air BnB.) I also like really lore rich stuff in general like WarHammer 40K. I have never played the table top game, but I have read a few of the books and will often watch YT videos about the lore. I do like series that have a lot of meat and number of books as long as they aren't extremely abusive to the main characters. I hate when the protagonists are literally just abused by the author over and over. Tchaikovsky was starting to annoy me in the Final Architecture Series with how he kept portraying the main character as a helpless little squid of a man, and kept putting him in situations that were just exhausting. I almost didn't start the 3rd book, and after finishing it, I decided to take a break from the author for a bit. Shows will do this to me as well. I got annoyed at Stranger Things, and even the Punisher series because of it. I think I'm going to go ahead and start the Leviathan Wakes series, and if it gets to be a little boring because of how recent the show was for me, I'll pivot to Blindsight, or Project Hail Mary.
