Rob, you could scratch your itch with a 458 for about half that price, or even a 360 for about 1/4 of that price, or less.
 
360 all day. Lots of maintenance and upgrades can be done by an owner who is semi-competent with a wrench.

Or even better 308/328 for the vintage coolness

Yeah I had the Challenge Stradale. The Scuderias are the equivalent lightweight special edition for the 430 model.

The Stradale is really a special car. I miss it, but it was too stressful for a guy like me to own.

I think a good intro into the Ferrari world if you want a stick is a 360 coupe manual. You can pick them up for $90K with higher miles. 430's are better looking in my opinion, but 6 speeds are north of 250K. As you say, you can get an F1 430 and spend 30K to convert it.

This is what my 360 engine compartment looked like a few weeks ago. There's a transmission oil-coolant heat exchanger under the intake that fails at about 20 years, mixing both fluids. I actually got it running a couple days ago and am working to get all the oil out of the cooling system and all the coolant out of the trans. Coincidentally, there's a shop about a mile from my office that contracted a 3rd party to manufacturer replacements and one of the guys is a friend-of-a-friend so I got a few $$$ off the replacement part but it was still close to $1000 for the kit. They sell a lot of them.

I recently learned that the 458s have some kind of ruinously expensive trans problem that seems to eventually affect all of them.

I really like shifting on a fun car. Sure if I was racing, I would want a PDK dual clutch deal, but for driving on the road, I prefer to row my own. A 458 isn't an easy manual conversion, like a 430 is, from my understanding. Plus I couldn't afford the outlay on a 458. It would be really hard to come up with the money to even get a manual 360 now. I would have to sell the Lotus, and I'm pretty certain the raw go kart feel of the Lotus would be missed, even though the Ferrari is cooler and sounds much better, but it is so much larger and heavier.

Lol...nice ones been there for a while.....these being 120-150k for a good/decent one make me sad....

And good 308s have been like 75 to near 100k+ for a while now...project cars (ie need help, parts service etc...not trashed) can be 30-50K....
 
Yeah all the F cars have been going nuts lately except for the 360. Frickin Maranellos are going for close to 200. Wasn't too long ago and you couldn't give those away.

If I had garage space, I'd pick up a salvage title 360 6 speed and go all Japaneso rice rocket on it just to have a fun beater that was loud and nasty! The ultimate would be a Cup car for the street but from what I've read its not a good idea.
 
The ad says the car has 2800 miles and this is the list of stuff replaced in a recent service:
  • F1 accumulators, pumps, and relays
  • F1 hydraulic actuators
  • Clutch position sensor and magnet
  • Gearbox ECU
  • E-Diff solenoid valve
  • Oil intake flange
  • Rear main seal
  • Thrust bearing
And this service cost $44,000.00 - Two thousand eight hundred miles......... W T F
 
I used to watch this youtube channel Normal Guy Supercar and he eventually became one of the guys who does stick conversions. He always commented the purists on Ferrari forums want him dead :crackup:

Yes and I do enjoy watching his vids. Poor guy had his shop flooded a few weeks ago.
