International travel tips/advice

In and around Reykjavik there are lots of high end trad hotels. Probably in Keflavik, but outside of that area it’s a crap shoot. We did really well with an Airbnb in Reykjavik as a base and a few guesthouses here and there. We weren’t going very far east from there as we were there to see my daughter play. It is a stunningly beautiful country and the people are fantastic.

Also, there are lots of bike excursion companies if you want to two wheel around the interior. Many muddy KTMs and BMWs on our travels.
 
My 2 cents. Iceland air, the seats are small, I have seen that advertisement for a layover in Iceland. Very tempting. We went last year, the people are great, scenery is outstanding. It’s expensive but a great place. It snowed on us for 3 days in June. If you can get out into the country it’s even better
 
Lots of stuff covered here I will through in a couple that I live by.
Dont check bags, use carry on luggage and backpack.
Just use ATM when you get there for cash. I like to pull $200 out for my trip which covers alot for atleast a week depending on what country I go to (food, etc..)
I dont bring my wallet with me when I am out and about, just my CC (2), and cash. Keep in zipped pocket of shorts/pants.
High potential for flight transfer failure when switching airlines for different legs of flights (they dont wait for you if different airline)
I have been to UK a few times, Scotland primarily, but never been to London. Not sure there will be much for you there. Food isnt good, weather isnt good. Maybe see some castles or something.
Use a grab app or Uber app to book your local travel. I am not a fan of using CC for taxi rides. Cash is good.

I assume they are shipping the suit to you when its done?
 
If you're only going to be in the UK for a few days I wouldn't bother with London and then having to try to get to Derby, especially if you're not fairly familiar with travelling. London is very expensive and you'll also find that the people are friendlier once you get out of the city and more so the further north you go. I'd suggest flying to Birmingham and renting a car, if you don't mind driving on the left, if you do that I'd also recommend an automatic which would make it easier for you on unfamiliar roads. The National Motorcycle Museum is in Birmingham and is worth a visit although Birmingham itself is a bit meh and they have just introduced a "clean air charge" for driving in the city centre. If you time it right you might be able to catch a race meeting at Mallory, Donnington or Darley Moor all within a fairly easy drive of Birmingham or Derby. If you like the outdoors, just north of Derby is the Peak District National Park.
 
Dudes. He is getting his first passport. First time out of the country. To get a custom made MX suit. That is AWESOME. Driving on the opposite side of the road? Go here for Italian? Oh you’re not getting a Dainese suit? Stay extra days in Iceland and go here and avoid there?

Simmer the f$ck down. He can always go back if he enjoys it. :) Given his positive attitude, it’s likely he will.
 
I was going to tell him to go to a tailor and get the measurements taken but I don't want to rob him of going to England. :D

England is probably the best first trip out of the US. Usually people go to mexico but who needs the screaming buttshole on their first trip? :D Plus they speak 'merican in England even if they have a bunch of stupid accents but you can mostly understand 'em. :crackup:

Go to the places everyone says NOT to go.
It's worked for me since I was in the Navy.
Also, "Don't be a Pussy" is good advice too. :)
 
I'd also add that while there is (imo) a "normal" amount of risk when travelling anywhere... MOST places I've been to in Europe felt (and are) safer than many big American cities. If you've been to NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, etc etc etc and you know how to act there, just do the same. Violent crime is lower in most frequently traveled European cities than American ones. The same way you should be concerned about pickpockets in Times Square or Hollywood Blvd or Fisherman's Warf... you should have the same approach in places like Southbank, Train Stations in London, etc.

It just occurred to me that all the suggestions, while accurate, might imply / or paint a picture that there is MORE crime and concern in when travelling to Europe whereas I believe the opposite is actually true. There's very little to be afraid of if you merely act responsibly and polite.

I'd say Canada would be his best trip out of the US. Sort of like going to Minnesota, but tons better. :D

Meh, canada is like traveling to minnesota but some of the beer is better and buying smokes is a PITA and expensive as fack.

Then there's the wanna be french up there.
