For those of you new to the Indy MGP race experience: There is *FREE* infield parking available every day inside Indy turn 3, acres and acres of it!!! Enter Gate 10 on the North end of the track, there's also a ticket booth on the way in. You drive through the gate, then under the track, and the Yellow Shirts then will guide you with *precision* to your parking spot. Open your trunk or tailgate, dive in that giant cooler for sammiches and BEERS!!! ( cans are the ticket! ) *Usually* - depending on ground moisture - they allow small grills for cooking, it's quite the tailgate party. And if you're lucky, you get a view of the giant video boards from your spot.... :up: Enjoy!!
This is interesting to me - how is it getting out of there at the end of the day? In previous years, I parked on the north end of the track, outside the tunnel on that end and it is painfully easy to slip down a side road quickly after the races are over.
Do you know if they are going to have on-track parking again (Turn 3) or is the parking you refer to in the grass?
Indy has traffic down to a science. They are used to dealing with 3-400000 people. 60 to 70 is childs play. I have parked where op was talking about, and was out of the racetrack in 30 minutes tops. I am one of those that starts working my way to the area im parked as the race is in its final laps and one of the first few hundred out, but even when i ride and have to get geared up, they get you out quick. They do a remarkable job.
We have parked both inside and outside. Unless you plan to make multiple trips to the car during the day, I think outside is better for race day. Last year it took us almost 2 hours to get out of the infield.

It has taken us 2 hours and 2.25 hours to make it to the highway after the race. getting out of Indy is a joke.
Usually we get out of the outer lots pretty quickly. Last year, we sat fro an hour before the disinterested yellow-shirt let our line go. Once off the grass, it was ten minutes to the Interstate. Go figure. Who's up for Palomino's Saturday?

OR...take the cooler in with you. Roll it right down the access road along the back straight and watch from the grassy knoll along turns 6-9. :up:

Did you walk home From my seat at home to my seat at the track is less than an hour. I hope there's a good crowd so this race continues. I think IMS is okay with 60k fans on race day.
You must of went the Wong Way, traffic has been pretty easy every year since '08 when it started for us. Now traffic over at the Mile track is a different story.
The one thing that turns me off about Indy is the lack of RV parking with a trackside view, if they can somehow work that into this venue they'd probably get more regulars every year. I was there last year, iirc, they charged roughly $450 for an RV site AND electric (50A), they charged this rate regardless if you were coming for all 4 days or not. I managed to pull off a 3 day stay so I didn't bother calling for any other packages they may offer outside of their website. Well, this year we can't make it for 3 days, 2 days tops and they wouldn't budge off their one and ONLY RV package....4days. Oh well, when the crowd numbers don't meet their expectations, maybe they'll second guess their ass backward policies.
Indy's normal races don't allow them the luxury of rv parking with track views. Even for GP they don't have enough room to do that on the road course (well with the golf course an all). Keep in mind they lasted decades if not a whole century running just one race a year and they needed the grandstand for just that single race. Amazing really.
Are you the dude who sits on the shoulder, with the turn signal on, completely motionless, looking over your right shoulder, hands in the air, pointing out the window, waiting for someone to let you merge? If so; I left right after the GP, walked across the street, got in my car, left the lot, made a left, then made a wrong turn, passed you twice, and still got on the highway in less than an hour.
You're right. It's funny seeing you break it down that way, the same thing has been said about Pocono for years, their bread and butter are there two Nascar events and to hell with anyone else who doesn't like their place.
