I still believe in the ideal of a government of, by, and for the people. As time goes by, we get further and further away from that ideal. That doesn't have anything to do with the merits of the ideal.

You are right, those services answer to the bureaucracy.

I'm not going to say "I pay your salary ' when I get pulled over for speeding, but at the same time, I believe in the ideal that they are tax payer funded servants of the public good.

I have a bridge pass, and our bridge gate is extremely fast so I usually just rip right up to it and it goes up in under 1sec

Well, unbeknownst to me, Ram decided to put automated braking on their new trucks, I pulled up and it screeched me to a halt while drinking my coffee, thus spilling it on mister happy.

Wait til you do something crazy like open your door to watch your corner while backing up, and it slams your transmission into park.

I never understood that approach... all my Sheriff friends ask for a raise & more time off when confronted with that old nugget..lol. Our City council approved a starting bump for new officers & vested officers saw 15% raise. The base pay is now north of 70k and most beat cops can get hundreds of hours of OT per year by default.
Police services for this city of 1 million citizens is close to a billion dollars. Tickets and court fines are probably close to 100 million over the Sheriff, FHP, FWC, JFRD etc.
Our park & permit development departments generate, a combined, 300 million in annual revenue.
Departments like library or any other money loser get grouped so their expenses are charged to the surplus of fees.
