DJI, GoPro, or Insta360

I'm looking for a new action camera. I know I can watch Youtube reviews but I swear 95% of them are given free stuff and told to talk good about the camera. so what says the beeb? Am I missing one I should consider.

I HAD a DJI Osmo 4 Action, it was complete garbage.

It was easy to connect to and setup, it was also fairly easy to use. The video quality and anti-shake are top notch, when it worked.

I used it only for taking videos on a bike and it would shut off 9 out of 10 sessions. Sometimes it would shut off before I made it out of the pits, sometimes it would make it 10-15 minutes, and anywhere in between. It was a shock if it recorded an entire session.

I tried a bunch of different mounts and settings and nothing helped. I finally got so frustrated, I took it off the bike and threw it into the ground several times just to make sure it no longer worked. The SD card survived without issue

My next camera will likely be a GoPro.

This is coming from someone who has a DJI drone and I couldn't be more happy with it. That camera was the complete opposite, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

My experience is pretty dated by now but I had several cameras that couldn't handle the intense vibration from the V Twins I raced (RC51, SV650). They would cut off at some point in the session (usually with the RC51 the first time I twisted the throttle "in anger." I never had any problems of that nature with any GoPro I had. One of my GoPros even recorded a rollover crash that demolished the bodywork and Fuzzy walking over to pick it up where it was laying in the grass near the bike.

If I were getting a new camera for action video today I'd definitely stick with GoPro.

I've never had luck with GoPro being reliable at recording when I wanted it to. Haven't gotten a new one since a GP Hero 8 Black though. The other 3 I had were also suspect. The best one was the original GoPro that was powered by AAA batteries.

every Go Pro i've had breaks. customer service is totally useless and just tells you to buy another one.

Insta isnt much better

What use-case?

Moto trackdays are the worst for high end electronics because of the vibration and heat. If this is your use, I’d be searching specifically for reviews from moto guys.

I have a GoPro Max and a Session. I use them to record on my boat and my mtb. They just work. I wish the Max was smaller, like an Insta.

my session just died, it overheats instantly and the battery won't charge - I am not sure I want another GoPro. My very first HERO was awesome. Every one since has been a let down.

Tiny lithium batteries don't last THAT long.

I'm surprised my Session is still going. It's 6yrs old, purchased in 2018. It's probably only alive because I haven't used it a ton.

Mostly mountain biking. I've had 3 gopro's and every one has bricked. I haven't had one since an 8.

I have an Insta 360 X3 and I like it. Easy to use and recording 360 all the time is great to make sure you don't miss any action. The phone app editor works pretty good too.

GoPro's have come a really long way.
I'm looking into the newest version to see how well they do before buying. The new mounting mechanism looks handy. (Push to release.)
I'm currently using a GoPro 10 and a MAX.
The MAX (360°) was fun for my first 360° camera, but I hardly use the thing anymore since it's a lot of post processing, and typically the 2D video you render is less than 4K resolution.
My GoPro 10 has been reliable. Super sharp footage with excellent image stability. I put a simple foam 'wind slayer' over over the thing, and the audio is useable at speed.

my gopro 3 black was awesome.
my recently purchased 11 black is garbage. it overheats like crazy and shuts down, also shutting down at 50% battery and it won't turn back on unless I remove the battery. so basically non usable on the fly.
a replacement device is on the way but i'm not at all optimistic.

I've had ok luck with GoPro, although mine is old now - I think it's an 8 or 9 black. I don't like how it splits the video record into 9min sections though and doesn't even have them in order. All in all, I'd say it's just OK, but nothing that would make me not consider an alternative.

I love the idea of the Insta360 GO because the little camera can fit inside of the helmet safely and probably much less prone to vibration and damage that way and gives a really cool perspective in my opinion. One thing I don't like about the gopro is finding a good spot to mount it on the tank that gives me the view I want without blocking my tucking and such. Having a smaller form factor in (or even on if it was allowed) would be way better for video/study purposes.

Even the new-ish Insta360 X4 overheats when recording in its highest resolution & framerate, 8K30. The market doesn't seem to care if a camera can use its entire battery at its highest resolution in most conditions, let alone hard or extreme conditions. So the companies aren't making cameras that can. IMO, plan on using the 2nd highest resolution for most recording for any new camera.

I bought a new GoPro Hero 9 last year. The video stabilization is great. But it won’t record anything for longer than EXACTLY 11 minutes and 48 second. On top of that, it intermittently turns itself off/on. Some videos are less than 2 minutes. I’m only using this POS trying to record 15-20 minute track sessions. The GoPro app as sucks.

SD card video files have a max file size. The rest of each recording is in another file with a comparable name.

@stangmx13 Thank for the info, I’m technology illiterate. But the partial clips of 1 minute to 3 minutes aren’t in addition to a corresponding 10 or 12 minute clip. The mini clips are the ONLY recording of the session.

Would the exactly 11 minute 48 second “full” sessions be a result of my picture quality level filling an SD file in that very specific and repeated time?
