? connecting 120V 30A generator to the house panel...

I bought a Ryobi 6500 generator for $100. Did a carb clean and it started right up. However, the GFI trips for both outlets after 7 mins. engine keeps running, but almost to the second the GFI trips. either outlet. Only have it powering a light. Any suggestions?

 

if you really want a backup genny...MEP 803A 3phase 240 or 1 phase 120/240 diesel and very reliable. find a gubment auction and buy one.

 

Agreed! Rarely have to use the A/C.

I could get one of those 'soft start' devices. I've rfead they cost a few hundred though. Not as concened with the A/C here near Milwaukee.
* My main concern still is not having my sump pump work to keep the basement dry. If water seeps in the foundation, it's a real bitch to get it out, clean, etc.

I do have this little gimic thing, battery back up thing we purchased. If it's really wet, that thing will not keep up on that small pump and 12v battery driven.



** I just logged in to this threa again to state that I stgarted and ran my genny again today.
Started easily - 2nd 'pull'. Ran great and smooth.

I just looked up the proper oil to run in it since I'll be changing the break in oil soon. Gonna run Full Syn 5W-30- the chart says any temp with this oil.

I think I mentioned, I leave it all hooked up to the 'Generator Inlet' I installed, and leave the cable attached, etc.
So, when it's really needed in a matter of minutes I can be on my back up power. It's out of the way at a cornber of my rear deck- easy to get to too.
* I don't have the more expensive auto start kind. Way more $$ for the same in the end.
I can pull start it, go to my basement and flip the generator breaker, which automaticlaly turns off the main breaker feed.

I've actually only HAD to use it once since it's been hooked up, and the power came back in 20 min., We statyed on ny Genny for a few hours though, 'just to be safe'.

 

I leave one end of the cord plugged into my generator inlet recpt. also. For some reason, it's a bugger trying to get the locking collar threaded part started, so once I did, I just leave it. I also have an aux. box mounted next to the breaker panel that will feed power to a Red light in the garage when the utility power comes back on, along with a "Powerbak" unit, and also I tied it into my alarm system on my house to show up when utility power is restored

I just use my neighbors lights to know when the grid is back up LOL.

Got the mep802a, the smaller brother of that bad boy hooked up to my house last 10 years. We got hit by a bad ice storm on the weekend. It’s been running pretty much all day other than nights for 3 days now. Still on original batteries. Bought a bunch of em at gov auctions back in 2015. Every single one had needed oil and filters and fired right up. One had a stuck injector pump I had to order a new one for. It’s an onan Perkins engine. Easily available parts. You can have a conversation next to it while it’s running. 1800rpm makes it a less frantic energy than normal 3600 rpm jobbies

 

It ran everything except the range, dryer, and tankless water heater. I installed a 25 gallon water heater inline and when I flip that breaker on it was the only thing that made the generator rev up. Mini split doesn't phase it.

 

Assuming your heat is gas?

 

Wish I had gas I was quoted 12k by utility company.

I have a pellet stove that is only 300W to run on cold days but mini split is fine 90% of the time. 1800 sqFt house in PNW.

I lose power 15 days a year sometimes up to a week. Living on a mountain pass

It's -15F this morning here in SE Wisconsin. Our grid power is on and fine.

I had built, and then bragged about my homebuilt 240V whole panel generator back up system.

It's DIY, and a pull start 5000W constant 6,250 peak genny- gasoline. It's a pull start. It is sitting on my rear dack, plugged in to the Genny outlet to the house, IN the -15F cold.

I often start it every month or 2, and it always starts 2 pull.

Well, not in the -15F weather we're having.
I tried it on full choke, partial choke, etc. Not even a sputter, after at least 20 pulls.

I'm going to try again. If no start, I'm going to try and get the huge round 50A plug twisted out of it and bring it in the 67F house to warm it up, then it should start.

*Edit- I got the wire plug out. It's too wide to fit it thru the back door fro mthe deck to let it warm up. I might plug in one of my hair dryers on the deck to warm it up some to see if it starts.
But even if it did, that ain't happening if my power is out LOL.

Good thing we don't need it today.

 

It’s 63 F in Oxford Florida, this weather front is not fucking around, digging into the back of my closet looking for my puffy coat while looking at the forecast for next week.

 

Speaking of plugs , did you check to see if it's fouled ?
That would have been the 1st thing I checked .

 

Might buy a can of aerosol starter fluid. Spray just a little into the air filter and see if that helps.

 

Update, after getting some carb cleaner and spark plug wrench out on the deck, I got my 'Mr Heater' propane heater started and blowing on the cylinder side of the open frame generator. After a few minutes of that,, it started right up! I never pulled the plug, or used any spray.

** BUT- after about 5 seconds, it kept dying! After about 5 start and runs, I found if I kept it choked about 1/2 way- it stays runnng. The gauge on it says it's putting out 242V too like that. Every time I push the chioke in, after a few seconds it dies again.

It's been running nice, 242V on about 1/2 choke. The air cleaner is clean, the gas in non ethanol and should be good.

It's running right now, steady 242V output like that now for over 10 minutes.

In warmer weather, irt runs fine on no choke after starting. As I said it's not the air cleaner- I checked.

I think it's the extreme could I guess affecting the fuel misture.

 

Yeah, change the plug. Starting it every month or 2, but not running it for very long won't get the plug hot enough to burn the crap off of it.

 

Yeah, -15 is a lot different than 60. Need to re-jet for winter. Or, see if you can pull the intake air off the muffler, so it is pre-heated. Not sure how your intake is set up for allowing that to happen.
