CB, I think we’ve spoken on this via dm? I’ve bought maybe a dozen or so Hamiltons but have none in my house. Perfect watch to give as a gift and they just work. :up: And you don’t break the bank.
For all you watch guys that speak highly of Seiko, Hamilton, or CASIO, why don’t Citizen’s get rated well too? I thought they had some kind of solar moment so you never wind and no battery either? I haven’t worn a watch since I started carrying a cell phone, but I remember thinking the eco drive looked nice in the late 90’s. EDIT @thrak410 beat me to it on Citizen.
My feeling is that Citizen is not necessarily a watch company. They only make quartz, and there's nothing remarkable about them. I'd call them a fashion or consumer electronics brand. Seiko makes great watches at the top of their line, and produces in-house mechanical movements. Hamilton uses Eta, but still mechanical and it's hard to beat the value. Casio... I don't know how to answer that without contradicting my own logic. I guess G-Shocks get a pass for being awesomely durable.
Thats a weird take ... Citizen has been around for over 100 years, and has pushed tech into their timepieces quicker than others. They've been around much longer than a lot of these watch brands. https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/collection/100-year-anniversary/
I'm of the opinion that if you like the watch, it's fine. Might not be for me but it's not my money. Unless you're talking Invicta. That's where I draw the snob line.
Fair enough. It’s just my opinion and there’s plenty of evidence to suggest I’m an idiot. I have my preferences but I’d never tell anyone else what to like.
Citizen makes Miyota movements which power all citizen automatics, and tons of microbrands, they are the 2nd largest automatic and manual movement maker in Japan outside Seiko. Their new Tsuyosa is getting tons of praise: https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/collection/mens-tsuyosa-automatics/ The reason they get little praise is because they dont make a ton of original looks, lots of look a likes.
Wanted to share my newest, wife is graduating and as a thank you for support acting as her editor though her degree she picked me up the CIGA Blue Planet II Gilded Age. This is the GPHG award winning (think Oscars for watches) handless watch. The compass points to the stagnant hour ring on the outside and the inner ring rotates the minutes. Ceramic case and bracelet, Sapphire crystal, customized Swiss Sellita movement. The 'dial' takes 68 hours to make. Ive had my eye on it for a while but wasnt something I was going to purchase myself, so this is a real treat.
Tissot PRX comes in quartz for ~$300 https://www.jomashop.com/tissot-t-classic-quartz-blue-dial-mens-watch-t137-410-11-041-00.html You can search by these features on Jomashop: https://www.jomashop.com/filters/wa...0}&case_diameter_as_range={"from":40,"to":45}
Been in Tokyo the last few days and been looking at watches. Ended up ordering that Hamilton posted earlier after seeing some in real life
https://nivadagrenchenofficial.com/ Some interesting pieces here. Really digging the watch with swappable bezel!
I tried to buy one of the mecaquartz chronokings direct from Nivada. They asked for something goofy like a picture of me holding my ID to prove identity. I cancelled it. I'd order from exquisite if you want one. I ended up picking up a used chronomaster lollipop. Looks great on a rally strap
Dunno if it's been posted before but this is a fun site. https://www.watchesofespionage.com/ Dude is always posting on Insta and X with new finds and history, I like it a lot. His series "Sketchy dudes wear Breitling" is some funny stuff.
Does anyone have a similar era Sub To compare this case to? Listing says likely unpolished but the lug dimensions make me think it’s been re-beveled. Perhaps I’m just comparing to a contemporary case… https://oliverandclarke.com/products/rolex-submariner-ref-5512-meters-first-1
There are more than 100 of them on Chrono24. To my uneducated eye, the one you posted looks polished/re-beveled. Maybe post on TRF.
I am far from being an expert, but that bracelet definitely looks polished. And so do 1,2 lugs for sure.
zoom in really close in the first photo. The bottom lugs show scratches, dents and what appear to be divots. As others have indicated, it appears to me that there may have been some work done to polish and/or re-beveled prior to current owner. It’s possible that since that work nothing has been done to it. If, as @SteveThompson indicated, there are 100 more of the same on Chrono24, why sweat this one if you have doubts?
