My Sub is the most comfortable watch I have, but I like the "heft" of my speedy.
I guess I am selective where I wear my more expensive watches because here in the LA area there has been recent violent robberies of watches (southcoast plaza) and a lot of watch theft/muggings (Topanga mall). I tend to just wear my Carrera if going somewhere iffy.
I have a stupid, but totally awesome Relax Sub.. It never comes off, shower, surfing, MTB, etc. My watch has been noticed more than a couple of times as a sub, I always confess that it is a snarky replica and hand wash certified. However, I hope that if I get mugged for the dumb thing I'm given the option to give it away instead of getting hit on the back of the head. That would suck for a $279 watch.

I've made it this far life still not understanding how people get watches taken off their wrists. I have felt movie tickets getting pulled out of my back pocket. Not saying I would have caught that in a club, but come on...

After the first repair I took on replacing a cracked crystal. The crystal is domed mineral glass and I was able to find a cheap replacement, and cheap it was, it measured 31.37mm not the 31.5mm it was suppose to so after a failed repair I sprung for a better crystal from a more reputable reseller.
I used a press to pop out the cracked crystal, and thoroughly cleaned the case. After fitting the crystal, I inspected and lightly oiled the movement and crown before reassembling and my very first mechanical watch is back in rotation!

Yeah I do ... I wear my less expensive watches to work. Saves the wear and tear on the nice stuff and also people don't freak out when the "IT guy" shows up with a watch worth $9500
Even the Tudor I just got from Philip (so awesome btw!) got a lot of attention the first time I wore it.

Wish I could talk you out of it but I have nothing but great things to say about the FXD! Coincidently enough, been researching GMTs myself (my starting point was something that was't a diver and wanted to explore brands I dont currently own). My big "challenge" was finding stores that carried what I was looking at so I could see them live.
Little did I know that driving to the hotel, Aruba would have a line of AD Boutiques in town, so convinced the lady to go check out some of the ones that had been on my list so I can see them live.....the experience was outstanding - they even let me walk out the store onto the street to see the watch in the natural light....then got hit with a double digit discount and no tax and ended up coming home with one more watch than what I left with...

Thanks man, it was instantaneous when I saw it, but just to be sure, walked out the store to sleep on it even though SHE was telling me to get it, woke up the next day and knew it was a done deal. I also like it because it has a great story behind it and cant tell you how many times Ive smiled looking at the Tudor thinking about the story behind it as much as the watch....

Anyone have any experience / advice for trading watches?
My mom left me her Rolex, it was her daily for at least 30 years. I dont have any original boxes or receipts, I might have some maintenacne receipts but thats it. Right now its just sitting in a safe. My wife doesnt want it, no kids to give it to eventually. So toying with the idea of trading it for a Rolex of my own, so at least can live on in spirit, but have absolutely no idea how to go about that. Would Rolex retailers even take trade-ins like that? I have specific wants for my watch too, so given availability that is another problem. Ideally Id want a new watch, so again, another wrinkle.

Most ADs aren't going to want to deal with a trade but you might stumble across one.
Really, sell it and you're gonna get maybe 60% of value without box and papers but maybe I'm off. Trade maybe a bit more since they're already trading you what they paid plus their profit. You could start with a reputable online dealer like Bob's and go from there.

I'd find some local mom and pop stores that sell used ones and see if they would work out a trade/cash deal with you.
Several in my area.
Beauty of a used one is you won't be pissed off at yourself when it gets its first scratch.
Or throw it on ebay and you don't have to deal with all the people and running around. Or a jomashop/bobs watches type deal

You may be able to sell them your mom's piece, and get extra payout if you take it as store credit. As dave said though, you'll receive less, as no box/papers.
I did sell a Zenith El Primero chrono, salmon dial to them. They paid cash and no hassle after they looked it over in person.
They also offered (should it have been needed) to pay shipping back if they didn't want it.
Bob's has been known to lowball.

Do you know the model/specs? Most woman's watches are less valuable than something similar for men. A lot of woman's Rolex's are 3-5K...some can be very expensive based on model, diamonds, etc.
You can try to find a local shop that has a Rolex you want and trade it in, or sell it on the open market and buy what you want.
