Air India setting records

He gave his opinion from information gathered. People talk and speculate. What exactly was click bait about that video?

As already mentined by mutliple comments on the video, this guy got a ton of things wrong because just like every other clout chasing social media dipshit he's too impatient to wait for actual facts and click bait is life.

Talking and speculating on a grainy ass video with no real info while claiming facts is click bait.

I'm sure you'd feel the same way if a racer died on the track, there was video and a bunch of YT dipshits decided to speculate on what happend?

We literary accuse legacy media of doing this (a.k.a. jumping to conclusions) but because it's some dipshit in a basement, it's totally ok?

I saw a video speculating that the ram air turbine looked like it was deployed, which means the engines were out or power was too low. The sound the plane made going by sounded like a propeller, so it adds up. Still waiting on the cause, though.

Yea I feel the same. You seem to have an issue that this conversation isn’t happening in hushed tones between two people. Guy crashed and died? Yea I’m asking “anyone know what happened?”

I guess we should all stfu until an investigation is done and official finding are released 3 years later? You don’t know human nature much.

I think what I have a problem with actually is social media outlets making money by being the "first on the scene" and speculating the fuck out of the facts of a tradegy while doing in off the back of "caring" or loving the industry/hobby/etc. when all they actually care about is views and revenue.

Again, legacy media MO.

I only saw a couple of takeoff videos, but it looks like they rotated very late and probably were still not airborne past the end of the runway, with dust and debris flying up. I know the news says the plane reached 500’, but that’s barometric altitude, no idea what the elevation of the runway is. I’m bringing that up because it looks to me like they barely got airborne at all.

One thing to remember is that if you’ve done your calculations correctly, the thrust is in and the flaps are set, the airplane is going to fly.

I HIGHLY doubt they lost thrust in both engines. Even multiple bird strikes, those engines are massive and it would take hits to the core (which is tiny) to shut it down. Fuel contamination? We’re really guessing here and getting deep into the realm of .0000000002 chances.

The Captain was very experienced and the 787 has some very sophisticated systems for making sure the flaps are set, performance data is set, etc. But it sure seems to me like flaps come into play at some point. Retracted early by accident? Wrong setting to begin with?

One thing the lay person may not understand is engine power is also calculated for each takeoff, and 99% of the time we’re using reduced thrust, which is programmed in and set by the autothrottle system. So if the performance calculation was wrong, not only could the flap setting be too small, but the thrust would be lower as well.

Like @Dave Wolfe and Papa says, the accelerate/stop and accelerate, lose an engine, and go speed (called V1) is calculated for every takeoff.

The other thing to note is all of the performance is based on accelerating to V1, losing an engine, and continuing the takeoff, so there’s already a healthy margin with 2 engines spinning.

So for now, my *guess* is some kind of massive error in performance calculations. Whatever the problem was, it started during the roll because they seemed to rotate late, it would become apparent very late in the takeoff roll that the numbers were off and they weren’t reaching the speed they needed. If they were struggling to get it in the air, this could explain why the gear never came up as well, they were too busy trying to fix a bad situation.

Really this is all just guessing at this point. The tail seemed intact so I’m guessing the boxes will be read out pretty quickly.

Terrible accident!

I saw some clear video from behind the plane. It sure appears they retracted the flaps instead of the gear. The gear remained down. The plane left the ground and once out of ground effect, struggled to maintain altitude up until it either hit that building of stalled into it.
The black boxes should quickly be able to determine the settings and configuration before the crash.

That was one of my first thoughts, that the flaps were up. But the video is kind of poor and it’s very hard to tell if the flaps are extended 1 or 5 degrees, even with clear video. From the front you could see the slats more readily, if we had that video angle. But that would be such a massive, obvious, error, with so many systems in place to prevent it, that I kind of dismissed it. Now if they were retracted early by accident, that would 100% fit the profile.

Unit saying flaps not set or retracted caused this, but if they had properly performing engines making ‘normal’ power for this TO, would they have settled that much by going from flaps 5 to 0?

From the back of the plane it sure feels like you continue accelerating at a pretty good pace after rotation.
My point is, if the engines were making correct TO power even if the flaps were retracted early wouldn’t lowering the nose allow the plane to fly out of it?

it’s weird to see a modern transport plane settle and crash like a 150 with 2 fat guys at 6000’ DA. I wouldn’t have had that on my bingo card

The lone surviver was interviewed and reported not only were the engines running, but the thrust increased right before impact. If that's accurate, engines are off the table. Reports I've seen said they did a mid runway takeoff. I think that combined with early flaps retraction may have doomed this flight.
Gino, I'll look for the clear video I saw. It follows the plane from behind from rotation until impact.

As I sit here on a 787 getting ready to fly 15 hours to Shanghai, I want to know what seat that survivor was sitting in. I'm guessing not right in front.

RIP fliers.

Yep, pilots probably went to APR (which pretty much is max power) right before the aircraft started losing altitude. High, hot and no flaps with gear down. Sad.

Heard an analysis from a pilot say wheels should have been up way before the nose started to roll over on that pig.
He speculated Co-pilot grabbed the wrong lever and took the flaps out of the configuration.
Wheels down - too much drag
No flaps
He tried to power out of it and it settled in to the ground.

I think the 787 can use only flaps 5 for TO...but for a long flight like this (Heavy...maybe flaps 15??)

IF they missed flaps and actually took off...i would think they would have enough power to still climb...but i only fly light singles.

Some pilots on another board said the one video before crash sounds quiet and the RAT is going...ie no engine thrust. I saw the tail section intact, sticking out of a building, so we should have all the data.

I really hope it wasnt some stupid oversight from the crew or maintenance causing this.
Apparently yes but not with the drag of the gear still being down. So I've heard. I'm no expert. Taking this from a commercial pilots analysis of the video.

That dude who walked away needs to be checked for superpowers. He might be a candidate for that superhero school that dude in the wheelchair runs.
